Mason District Arts Council

Poetry Contest

The Mason District Arts Council, a volunteer organization of our local art community, is convening a series of community art events in June 2026 to reflect on America’s 250th. The focus of these arts events is to reimagine the ideas of the American Revolution and engage the public through the arts.

As part of this effort, we are inviting adults and high school students to submit to our poetry contest. The contest is open to anyone with a connection to Fairfax County, VA. Winners will have the opportunity to read their poems at Mason District art events in June.

Deadline: May 9th, 2026

The New Colossus

by Emma Lazarus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
